Staying active with the people you care about doesn’t have to mean expensive gym memberships or fancy equipment. In fact, some of the most fun ways to get moving are the simplest—and they’re free! Let’s talk about how you can bring a little more movement into your days without breaking the bank or feeling like it’s a chore.
1. Morning Walk & Talk
Start your day with a refreshing walk in the neighborhood or at a local park. To keep things interesting, choose a “theme” like sharing favorite memories or things you’re grateful for in your life. It’s a simple way to get moving and connect on a deeper level.
2. Volunteer
Sign up for activities like park clean-ups or walking dogs at a local shelter. These options let you stay active while giving back to the community—a win-win for everyone involved. Many of you though that I volunteer at an assisted living facility and it is seriously the highlight of my week! I lead the participants through a workout AND tell them about Jesus!
3. Explore Local Trails
Look for paved or easy trails nearby and take a group stroll. Bring water, comfy shoes, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. It’s a stress-free way to get active and enjoy the company of others.
4. Complete a Workout Video
Turn your living room or backyard into a fitness class setting. Then, decide on a workout video (we have hundreds of free choices here) that is accessible to everyone and go through it together, making sure to encourage one another throughout!
5. Create a Step Challenge
For my competition lovers, use a fitness tracker or smartphone app to compete in a friendly step-count challenge. You can motivate each other with fun rewards like homemade dinner or a relaxing coffee date for the winner.
6. Set Up a “Minute to Win It” Fitness Challenge
Bring some friendly competition to your hangout with fun mini-games. Who can do the most squats in a minute? How long can you hold a tree pose? Keep it lighthearted and hand out silly prizes like a hand-drawn certificate or a crown made of leaves.
7. Outdoor Games & Activities
Revisit childhood classics like badminton, frisbee, or even hopscotch. These low-impact activities can spark plenty of laughs while keeping everyone active.
The best part about these activities? They’re completely free, easy on the body, and full of opportunities to make meaningful memories. So grab your loved ones and make movement a joyful part of your routine!
