TN offers the lowest power tariff for domestic consumers in India

Tamil Nadu offers the lowest electricity tariff for domestic consumers in India, the State government said on Monday.

Citing data shared on Twitter by analyst Arvind Warrier as of March 2023, an official statement highlighted that the average household electricity cost in Tamil Nadu stands at just ₹113 per 100 units—significantly lower than other States like Maharashtra (₹668), Uttar Pradesh (₹693), and Rajasthan (₹833).

The State offers a range of subsidies, including 100 free units of electricity for every domestic consumer. For consumption above this limit, the average cost remains highly affordable at ₹113 per 100 units. In stark contrast, Mumbai households face varying rates from ₹488 to ₹643 depending on the service provider, while States like West Bengal and Karnataka charge ₹654 and ₹631, respectively.

Tamil Nadu’s subsidies extend beyond households. Farmers receive free electricity for over two lakh agricultural pump sets. Power loom weavers are given 1,000 free units every two months, while handloom weavers receive 300 free units in the same period, the government said.
