MPs from Maharashtra had asked the government about the measures taken by the Government to overcome the obstacles and meet the project deadlines.
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs told Lok Sabha that and the Smart Cities Mission aligns with the Government of India’s urban development policy, which is guided by constitutional provisions. Urban planning, including town planning, is primarily the responsibility of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Urban Development Authorities, as per the 12th Schedule of the Indian Constitution (Article 243W). The Centre , however, supports States with strategic interventions and schemes, viewing urbanisation as a key driver of economic growth.
Homes for displaced
In a related development, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a major plan to address the issue of abandoned and stalled hazardous buildings in Mumbai, which have displaced numerous residents. Shinde recently assured that the government is committed to bringing displaced citizens back to Mumbai by providing them with rightful homes.
Shinde said that the State has initiated a redevelopment plan for hazardous and stalled projects in collaboration with agencies such as MSRDC, MIDC, BMC, MHADA, SRA, and CIDCO. As part of the first phase, 200,000 homes will be completed, with each agency tasked with handling two to three projects. The government also aims to encourage self-redevelopment to expedite the completion of stalled projects.
The implementation of this scheme has begun on a pilot basis in Thane city through CIDCO and the Thane Municipal Corporation. This initiative is expected to provide a robust solution to the city’s housing challenges while ensuring that displaced residents are rehabilitated in safe and secure homes.
