Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was Saturday cremated with full State honours at New Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat. He was accorded a 21-gun salute by the forces.

Manmohan Singh had passed away on Thursday night, at AIIMS in New Delhi. He was 92. 

Earlier in the day, Manmohan Singh’s mortal remains were taken from his residence to the Congress’s Akbar Road headquarters in New Delhi at 8 am for the public to pay their respects to the former PM. 

At around 10 am, a funeral procession proceeded to Nigambodh Ghat and Singh was laid to rest with full State honours at 12:50 pm.

Singh had served as India’s 13th Prime Minister in the United Progressive alliance from 2004-2014. As Finance Minister, Singh had ushered in a series of economic reforms in 1991, scripting a turnaround for the crisis-hit economy.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Health Minister JP Nadda, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia were among those present for Singh’s last rites.

The last rites was also attended by King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, who paid his last respects to Singh at Nigambodh Ghat.

Manmohan Singh was a Member of Parliament till April, 2024. He was never elected to the Lok Sabha but was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1991 from Assam and was re-elected in 1995, 2001, 2007 and 2013 to the Upper House.

Earlier, the Home Ministry on Friday said the government will allocate space for a memorial of India’s 13th Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh).

Home Ministry had also in a statement confirmed that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would receive state honours during his last rites.

Post Singh’s demise, the government had announced a 7-day mourning period to pay homage to the former Prime Minister.
