If a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is anything to go by, Apple is working with Sony on VR gaming controller for Vision Pro.
Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman reveals that the partnership between Apple and Sony has been in the works for several months. This partnership aims to introduce Sony’s VR controllers from PSVR2 as an optional accessory for Vision Pro users.
While PS5’s DualSense and Xbox controllers are already supported by Vision Pro for gaming, they lack the six degrees of freedom (6DOF) required for precise VR gaming controls.
Apple approached Sony earlier this year, and the duo agreed to work together on launching support for the PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers on the Vision Pro. Inside Sony, the work has been a monthslong undertaking, I’m told. And Apple has discussed the plan with third-party developers, asking them if they’d integrate support into their games.
Beyond gaming, Gurman suggests that the controllers could enhance productivity tasks and media editing in visionOS. Users could navigate the operating system using the controller’s thumb stick and directional pad for scrolling, while the trigger button could replace the finger pinch gesture for selection.
Apple and Sony had apparently planned to announce this feature last month, but it has been postponed for some unknown reasons for the time being. According to Gurman, we should still expect this come to fruition at some point, unless it is abruptly scrapped altogether, which seems unlikely at this point.
