Side Hustle Ideas For Stay At Home Moms (& Dads)

Side hustles are a great way to make a recurrent income. If you want to be at home and spend the day with your little one, you can always start a side hustle so you don’t need to go back to work.

I know a few stay at home mums that make a full-time income from side hustles. Some of them are making even 6 figures! No matter what, you can start your career from a side hustle.

If you are a stay at home dad, all of these apply to you too. I’m a dad and I’m currently doing more than one at the moment.

Let’s get started with the first side hustle!

Start A Blog

Blogging is one of the most creative side hustles there are. You might think that setting up a blog and keeping it running sounds like hard work, but it’s a labour of love in so many ways, and the work it requires isn’t endless. All you need to do is choose a subject or niche which you enjoy, and then it won’t even be like work!

Once you’re up and running and you’ve established a regular following, you can start to monetise your blog via advertisement, affiliate marketing or even creating your own products.

  • Affiliate income. To put it simply, affiliate income is when you link a product that is sold on another site (for example, Amazon). If somebody clicks your link and ends up buying that product from Amazon, you earn a commission on that sale.
  • Advertising networks. Advertising networks pay you when you display their ads on your blog. It can be in the sidebar, at the beginning of a blog post or in any other location of your blog (you decide where).
  • Sponsored content. It can be articles, pins, emails… It’s very common for bloggers to get paid for sponsored posts. You can get paid for reviewing a product related to your niche.
  • Sell eBooks.
  • Sell courses and printables. A course is similar to an e-book but it generally has videos and exercises. It’s very common for a blogger to offer a course at a certain price (for example $97) and then the ebook, which is the reduced version of the course, at a lower price (for example $27)

As a new blogger you’ll face the first struggle; choosing the right topic (or niche as we call it in the blogging world). But do not fear, I’ve written an article on how to choose the right blog topic (and blog name) to help you. Once you decide what you’ll blog about, you can register your domain name and get started.

Teach English online

The great thing about teaching English online is that you don’t always need to have qualifications in order to do it. Some companies will accept you as long as you are a native English speaker and you have a good general education.

Then, you schedule your lessons according to the time you have. Each lesson usually takes between 30 minutes to one hour and you conduct them via Skype or Zoom. The company also provides you with the lesson plans, so it’s just up to you to present it in a fun and engaging way.

One of the most popular platforms at the moment is VIPKID. with over 600,000 students and paying up to $25 per hour, I’m not surprised they have been featured on Forbes as one of the best places to work online.

The only requirement with VipKid is that it requires a University degree so it might not be for everybody.

Freelance Proofreading or Writing

If you have a creative streak, how about freelancing as a writer or a proofreader? This means you’ll write for various different clients, usually ebooks, articles, or blog posts. You then charge by the hour for the work you do, or you charge by project. The same goes for proofreading.

When you work as a freelancer you’ll have to build up your reputation and you’ll have to bid for jobs as competition is fierce. However, once you’ve got a good reputation, you’ll find that clients keep coming back to you.

I have a good friend who went from charging $50 to $250 per article after finishing the Earn More Writing course from Holly. On her free workshop, she shares the strategy she used to make six-figures doing freelance writing.

You can have a look to the free workshop and course here.

Surveys

Whilst you’re sitting down, chilling out, grab your phone or laptop and give your opinion on a few different subjects, earning cash as you go along. There are survey companies who will pay various amounts for your thoughts, and the more you do, the more you earn.

Be sure to shop around and find the best survey site for you, as some pay more than others, and some pay out more regularly than others too. Then, get clicking and giving your opinion! You can spend as much time on this as you like, so it’s ideal for say at home moms.

Here are some of my favorite survey sites:

Make Crafts And Sell on Etsy

If you have a creative flair for arts and crafts, why not enjoy your hobby and then sell what you make or create on Etsy? Simply set up your own Etsy store and get selling.

As your reputation grows, you’ll find that you sell more, but it’s a great way to enjoy your hobbies and make a little extra cash from them too.

Pinterest Virtual Assistant

There is a high demand for Pinterest Virtual Assistants. Many companies use Pinterest for their business but they don’t have the time to promote their business as a professional Virtual Assistant would do.

The market is huge! I’m not surprised why the Pinterest VA course is so popular.

What a good Pinterest VA mean for a business? A Virtual Assistant can support getting exposure, create brand awareness, and help to get leads.

Pinterest has over 300 million active users. One every two US women use Pinterest.

To start your career as a Pinterest VA, you’ll need to find answers to some questions first. How to get clients? How much to charge? Where do I start? Become A Pinterest VA Today provides answers to all these questions.

Once you start your career as a VA, the world open to great opportunities. You can live anywhere, work from anywhere, and have clients from anywhere!

Become an Amazon Seller

Those with a keen business mind could find a great amount of cash by becoming an Amazon seller. This means you source products at a good price, purchase them, and then sell them on for a higher price, therefore making a profit.

As people leave you positive reviews, the more people will be inclined to sell from you, and the more cash you’ll make. This can become quite an addictive process, so it’s certainly good fun for those who love to shop and sell!

Get Cash Back When You Shop Online

Swagbucks gives you money every time you buy anything online. Simply use it as a search engine (just like Google), then you can redeem points for gift cards.

I already redeem 3 Amazon gift cards for $50 and it feels great. Plus, you’ll receive a free $5 bonus just for signing up.

Another great cashback site is Top Cashback, they are my second favorite. There are 20%-30% discounts in many hotels for when you are traveling. Also, you can get a free $5 Amazon gift card for a limited time by signing up.

Last year I saved $275 on my car insurance by using TopCashBack. Also, I received $135 cash back for my current internet company.

Last, but not least, Rakuten. Get your automatic $10 voucher with Rakuten – Read my review to check how.

Freelance as a Translator

If you are you bilingual… did you know there is a $40 billion dollar market waiting for you to start your side hustle?

If you speak more than one language you could earn a good amount of cash by doing this. You can either translate verbal communication from a recording, or you can translate written documents.

Again, when freelancing you’ll need to register as self employed and pay taxes, but it’s certainly a way to make an income by using your skills from home.

Have Regular Clear Outs

If you don’t want a regular side hustle, but more of an occasional deal, having occasional or regular clear outs and selling what you have on eBay is a great way to make cash and streamline your home!

Get into that garage and give it a clear out, Spring clear your wardrobe, and whatever you find, list it on eBay and watch the bids come in.

The Last Thing To Remember About Side Hustle Ideas For Moms

Side hustles are amazing and have a lot of potential. No matter which side hustle you go for, make sure you stick to it for a few weeks at least until you see if it works for you.

You can start more than one at the same time, but don’t try to cover everything, otherwise, you might burn yourself.

For the list above I would suggest trying to start your own blog, which requires little investment and opens a lot of opportunities for your career.

But if investing money is an issue for you, then I recommend doing online surveys to get the initial money until you can afford to start your blog.

These side hustles are ideal for stay at home moms. Not only do they give you something to do for yourself, e.g. a business that is yours, but they also bring you extra cash. Of course, they also don’t take you away from the most important job in your life – being a stay at home mom to your family.

Are you already doing a side hustle? Are you planning to start one? Which one? Share it in the comments, I’m always looking for new ideas.
