The streamers had a particularly big night at the 2025 Golden Globes.
During the January 5th ceremony, Netflix’s musical crime comedy Emilia Pérez led the film categories with four wins, while FX’s samurai drama Shōgun, which streams outside of the U.S. (including Canada) on Disney+, also snagged four awards.
Emilia Pérez has been a particularly contentious winner; while many in Hollywood have praised the film, it’s also been criticized for its depictions of its central trans character and Mexicans as a whole. People have also been debating the quality of Emilia Pérez compared to other competing films, such as the acclaimed Anora, Challengers and The Substance.
Ultimately, though, Emilia Pérez was the most awarded film at the Globes, winning Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, Best Supporting Actress — Motion Picture (Zoe Saldaña) and Best Original Song — Camille, Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard (“El Mal”). This year’s Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17th ahead of the March 2nd awards ceremony, so it remains to be seen how well Emilia Pérez will make out there.
Less controversial has been Shōgun‘s sweep, given the significant acclaim the B.C.-filmed series has received since its premiere early last year. In particular, the series won 18 trophies at the Emmys in September, a record for a non-English language drama. Now, at the Golden Globes, Shōgun was named best drama series, with leads Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada and supporting actor Tadanobu Asano also all winning for their performances.
Other notable wins include The Brutalist winning Best Motion Picture – Drama, Jeremy Allen White netting his third consecutive Golden Globe for his lead role in FX’s The Bear, Demi Moore receiving Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for The Substance and Colin Farrell taking home Best Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology series, Made for TV Movie for The Penguin (making him only the third person to earn a Globe for playing a comic book villain alongside The Dark Knight‘s Heath Ledger and Joker‘s Joaquin Phoenix).
