Can you share what motivated your transition from a corporate career in accounting and human resources to launching your own jewellery brand?

My journey from a corporate career to launching BOZ was fuelled by a desire to align my work with my passion and purpose. While I appreciated the stability and challenges of previous roles, I often felt a creative void. Jewellery design with its balance of artistry and precision, had always captivated me.

Over time, I realized that creating minimalist fine jewellery was not just a creative outlet, it was a way to connect with people in a deeply personal way. Each piece could tell a story, mark a milestone or become a cherished heirloom.

I must add that the decision to step away from the corporate world was not easy but it was necessary. I wanted to build something that reflected my values, simplicity, elegance and meaning. Launching BOZ allowed me to embrace creativity, take ownership of my work and bring joy to others through timeless designs.

How have your previous experiences in accounting and human resources influenced your approach to running a jewellery business?

Without a doubt, my background in accounting and human resources has been a cornerstone of my approach to running BOZ. From accounting, I developed a strong foundation in financial management, which helps me navigate budgeting, pricing and cash flow with confidence. This financial clarity ensures BOZ remains sustainable and allows me to focus on creativity while maintaining profitability. Human Resources Management, on the other hand, taught me the value of communication, collaboration and cultivating strong relationships. These skills are essential in managing partnerships, creating a seamless experience at every stage of the business. Together, these experiences have given me the discipline, organisation and strategic mindset needed to grow BOZ with both professionalism and passion. They have allowed me to balance the creative and operational aspects of the business.

What were some of the most significant challenges you faced when entering the jewellery industry, and how did you overcome them?

Entering the jewellery industry came with its share of challenges, each of which shaped my journey as an entrepreneur. One of the most significant hurdles was managing BOZ in Nigeria while relocating to the USA in 2017. Balancing the demands of running a then local business from a new country required a great deal of adaptability, clear communication and trust in my team back in Nigeria. I relied on technology and established streamlined processes to ensure the business continued to operate smoothly despite the distance. Another challenge was learning the intricacies of jewellery production. While I had a clear vision for my pieces, translating that into reality required building strong relationships with skilled artisans and suppliers. There was a steep learning curve but through persistence, research and open communication, I created a reliable network that brought my designs to life. Above all, I give God all the glory for giving me the strength, wisdom and creativity to keep moving forward. Every challenge I faced was an opportunity to lean on God and trust His plan. His faithfulness has been the cornerstone of my journey and the foundation of any success I have achieved.

You mentioned developing a unique design aesthetic. How would you describe your style, and what influences it?

My design aesthetic can be best described as minimalist, timeless and understated. I believe in creating pieces that are elegant in their simplicity, designs that are not only beautiful but also meaningful. I focus on fine details, clean lines and subtle forms, allowing the quality of the materials and craftsmanship to speak for themselves. I also draw inspiration from modern design principles, simplicity, functionality and sophistication. My faith is also a key influence, I believe that beauty comes from a place of authenticity and purpose and this is reflected in every piece I create. I want my jewellery designs to not only complement personal style, but also resonate with the wearer, evoking a sense of connection and significance.

Can you elaborate on your learning process regarding gemstones, metals, and jewellery craftsmanship? What were some key takeaways?

My learning process regarding gemstones, metals and jewellery craftsmanship has been both a journey of deep research and hands-on experience. A significant step in my education was obtaining the GIA Applied Jewellery Professional Development Diploma which gave me a formal foundation in gemstone identification, metal alloys and jewellery design techniques. This diploma provided me with invaluable knowledge that enhanced my ability to make informed decisions about the materials I use and how to create pieces of exceptional quality. I also focused on the fundamentals, understanding the different types of gemstones, their properties and how to source them responsibly. I learnt about the various cuts, colours and qualities that make each gemstone unique, which helped me choose those that best align with my designs and values. One key takeaway was the importance of understanding the story behind each stone, not just its appearance. This knowledge allows me to create pieces with intention and meaning.

When it comes to metals, I had to become familiar with the various alloys, their durability and how they interact with different gemstones. I have experimented with different finishes and techniques, learning which metals complement my minimalist style best while maintaining quality and longevity. For instance, I work primarily with 18k gold, as well as sterling silver for their timeless appeal and hypoallergenic properties.

Craftsmanship was perhaps the most intricate aspect to master. I began by closely studying jewellery making techniques, everything from casting and stone setting to polishing and finishing. I have had the privilege of working with skilled artisans who have taught me the importance of precision and patience in every step. A key takeaway was that true craftsmanship goes beyond the physical act of making, it is about attention to detail, refining skills over time and remaining open to learning. Over the years, I have come to understand that the learning process never truly ends. There is always more to explore, whether it is a new technique, a rare gemstone or a more sustainable practice. But the core takeaway is that quality, authenticity and respect for the materials are paramount in every piece of jewellery I create.

Your collections are inspired by love and timelessness. What specific experiences or stories from your life have influenced your designs the most?

My collections are deeply inspired by love, timelessness and the meaningful connections we forge with the people and moments that shape our lives. One of the most profound influences on my designs has been my personal journey as a wife, mother and the deep sense of loss I have experienced through the passing of my only son and sister. These profound losses have given me a unique perspective on the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we love.

The pain of losing my son and sister greatly influenced my designs in powerful ways. It has taught me that love transcends time and space and that the bonds we share with others are everlasting. This understanding of life’s impermanence drives me to create pieces that symbolise both love and remembrance, offering a way for people to hold onto the most meaningful relationships, even when they are no longer physically present.

I want my designs to reflect the idea that, though life is fleeting, the love we share and the memories we create with others are eternal. Each piece I create serves as a symbol of enduring love, a way to keep cherished moments alive and honour those we have lost. This is why our slogan is “Forever and Beyond.”

My faith in God has also been a constant source of strength through all of these experiences and it is reflected in the timelessness and depth of the jewellery I create. Ultimately, the love and loss I have experienced in my life continue to shape my designs. Through my jewellery, I aim to create pieces that carry emotional significance and serve as reminders of the beauty, strength, and enduring love that transcends time and space.

What is your strategic vision for BOZ in the next five years, and how do you plan to achieve it?

My strategic vision for BOZ over the next five years is to continue growing as a brand that is synonymous with timeless minimalist fine jewellery, while expanding both in the USA and internationally. I envision BOZ becoming a respected name in the jewellery industry, known not only for exceptional craftsmanship, but also for our commitment to authenticity, sustainability and meaningful design. To achieve this, I plan to focus on three key pillars, innovation, customer connection and global expansion. In the long run, my dream for BOZ is to be more than just a jewellery brand, it should be a symbol of love and the timeless beauty of life’s most meaningful moments. Every step we take will be intentional, focused on elevating both the brand and our customers’ experience.

How has your global perspective and cultural sensitivity shaped your brand and its offerings?

My global perspective and cultural sensitivity have been key influences in shaping BOZ into a brand that celebrates diversity, heritage and timeless design. Having relocated to the USA in 2017 while managing BOZ in Nigeria, I have gained a unique understanding of the different cultural values and preferences that influence how people connect with jewellery. This experience has allowed me to design pieces that are not only aesthetically appealing but also culturally meaningful and versatile across different markets. For instance, I draw inspiration from both Africa and Western design sensibilities, blending intricate African symbols with minimalist Western aesthetics to create jewellery that resonates with a wide range of people. This cross-cultural influence is woven into the very fabric of BOZ’s identity, resulting in designs that are timeless yet have a universal appeal.

I also ensure that BOZ embraces inclusivity, offering pieces that can be worn by individuals from different backgrounds and walks of life. This cultural sensitivity informs the materials I select, the messages my designs convey and the way I approach customer engagement. I aim to make BOZ a brand that not only appreciates cultural diversity, but also creates pieces that allow people to express their personal stories, whether they are celebrating love, heritage or milestones.

In the next phase of BOZ’s growth, I am committed to further expanding my global reach, making sure that the jewellery we offer continues to speak to people from all over the world, honouring their personal and cultural stories while maintaining a consistent standard of excellence and craftsmanship.

You mention BOZ being a heartfelt tribute and a mission. Can you share more about how this mission influences your day-to-day operations and decision-making?

This mission influences every aspect of my daily operations and decision making. At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to creating jewellery that not only embodies beauty, but also carries emotional significance for those who wear it. Every choice I make, whether it is selecting materials, crafting designs or engaging with customers, is driven by a deep desire to ensure that each piece resonates with personal stories and milestones.

In terms of operations and decision making, this mission shapes the way we approach craftsmanship and material selection. I prioritise sustainable, high quality gemstones and metals, understanding that each piece represents far more than just a product, it holds meaning, whether celebrating love, marking a milestone or remembering a cherished moment. This dedication to excellence is reflected in our meticulous attention to detail and the care that goes into every design.

The mission also guides our approach to customer relationships. I believe each customer’s journey is unique, and I aim to build a genuine connection with them through personalised experiences and by sharing the story behind each design. Whether through custom consultations or heartfelt communication, I strive to ensure that our customers feel emotionally connected to the jewellery they choose, knowing it symbolises something deeply meaningful in their lives.

Above all, every decision is rooted in our purpose to create jewellery that reflects not just beauty but the love and significance that define the most meaningful moments in life.

In what ways do you hope BOZ will create a lasting legacy, both for your customers and for the jewellery industry?

I hope BOZ will create a lasting legacy by being a brand that transcends trends and resonates with people on a deep personal level. My vision is for BOZ to be synonymous with timeless elegance and emotional significance. I want each piece of jewellery we create to serve as a cherished symbol of love, connection and life’s most important moments, passed down through generations. By crafting designs that carry meaning, we are not just creating products, we are creating heirlooms that hold sentimental value, becoming part of our customers’ stories and legacies.

For the jewellery industry, I aspire for BOZ to be a catalyst for change in how fine jewellery is perceived and produced. Our focus on authenticity, sustainability and craftsmanship sets a standard that challenges the industry to be more intentional about the materials used, the stories told through design and the way businesses engage with their communities. I hope to inspire a movement where quality, sustainability and emotional connection become the cornerstones of every jewellery brand.

Ultimately, I want BOZ’s legacy to be about more than just beautiful jewellery, it’s about creating a brand that touches lives, honours love and encourages future generations to value both quality and meaning in everything they wear. By blending timeless design with purpose, I believe BOZ can leave a lasting imprint not only on our customers but also on the broader jewellery industry, inspiring others to follow suit.

How do you connect with your customers and what role do they play in shaping your collections?

Connecting with customers is at the heart of everything we do at BOZ. I believe that jewellery is not just a product, but a personal expression of one’s story and I aim to foster meaningful relationships with every customer. Whether through one-on-one consultations, social media engagement or sharing the behind-the-scenes process of how our jewellery is made, I focus on building trust and understanding their needs. Listening to their stories, desires and milestones allows me to create pieces that feel personal and significant, resonating with the values and experiences that shape their lives.

Our customers play an integral role in shaping our collections. Their feedback, experiences and emotional connections to our designs influence the direction of future collections. For instance, when customers share how a piece has marked a special moment whether it’s an engagement, anniversary or a remembrance, it inspires me to create more designs that speak to these universal themes of love, connection and life’s important milestones. I also take note of trends, preferences and evolving customer needs, making sure our designs remain relevant while staying true to the timeless aesthetic we are known for.

The relationship I have with my customers is what drives the creative process. Their stories are the heart of our designs and through their feedback and engagement, we continuously evolve to ensure that BOZ remains a brand that not only meets but exceeds their expectations.

How do you ensure that each piece of jewellery captures the essence of love and meaningful connection that you describe?

It begins with the design process, where I focus on creating timeless, minimalist pieces that evoke emotion. I want each design to tell a story, whether it represents a celebration of love, a cherished memory or a life changing milestone. The beauty of simplicity in these designs is that they allow the emotions they represent to shine through, making each piece not just a piece of jewellery but a lasting symbol of a special moment.

In addition, the materials I choose are integral in capturing the emotional depth of the design. I carefully select ethically sourced gemstones and metals because I believe that the integrity of the materials should mirror the values of the piece. Each stone, whether it’s a diamond, sapphire or emerald, carries its own symbolism and beauty. I pay attention to its colour, clarity and how it resonates with the design’s purpose, ensuring that it enhances the emotional connection the piece is meant to evoke.

Craftsmanship plays a crucial role in ensuring that every piece feels truly special. I work with skilled artisans who share my commitment to precision and quality. From the setting to the finish, every detail is considered with care because I believe that great craftsmanship adds to the emotional experience of the wearer. Each piece should feel intentional not just in design, but in how it is made, ensuring it becomes a timeless heirloom.

Customer input also plays a vital role in ensuring that the jewellery we create reflects love and personal connection. Through personalised design consultations, I can craft custom pieces that hold deep significance for our customers. Whether it’s through engraving a meaningful date, selecting a particular gemstone or creating a design that represents a unique relationship, these personal touches ensure that each piece becomes more than just jewellery, it becomes a cherished symbol of love and connection.

In all, it’s the thoughtful combination of design, materials, craftsmanship, and personal connection that allows BOZ’s pieces to truly capture the essence of love and timeless beauty.

What current trends in the luxury jewellery industry do you find most exciting or concerning?

There are several trends that both excite and concern me. Some trends I find exciting are the growing emphasis on sustainable and ethically sourced materials. Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environmental and social impact of their purchases, which aligns with BOZ’s commitment to responsible sourcing and transparency. Also, the increasing demand for bespoke, personalised jewellery is thrilling. It allows customers to create pieces that hold deep personal significance, making the jewellery more meaningful and reflective of individual stories and milestones. Interestingly, advancements in technology, such as 3D printing and enhanced gem-cutting techniques, are opening up exciting possibilities for more intricate designs and custom creations, allowing for greater creativity and precision in craftsmanship. Some trends I find concerning are the rise of mass produced jewellery. This threatens the artistry and emotional value of fine jewellery. It concerns me that consumers might prioritise trends over quality and craftsmanship, undermining the timeless nature of well-made pieces.

Another concern is over saturation of the market, this is making it harder for smaller brands to stand out. I have come to realise that authenticity and a clear brand story are essential to differentiate from the noise. Price pressure and exclusivity also calls for concern. The growing demand for luxury items often comes with price pressures which can compromise the quality and craftsmanship of the jewellery. True luxury should reflect value beyond the price tag, encompassing quality, experience and emotional significance.

In summary, I am excited by trends in sustainability, personalisation and innovation but concerned about the impact of fast fashion, market saturation and price driven competition in the industry. At BOZ, we remain committed to creating jewellery that embodies quality, meaning and timeless beauty.

What advice would you give to someone looking to break into the jewelry design field, especially from a non-traditional background?

My advice would be to stay true to your passion and embrace your unique perspective. The jewellery industry like any creative field, thrives on innovation and their distinct background can offer a fresh valuable point of view. Essentially, breaking into jewellery design is about passion, dedication and staying open to learning and growth. Their non-traditional background gives the chance to bring something fresh and innovative to the field and with perseverance, they can make a lasting impact.

Looking back on your journey, what would you say has been your proudest moment in building BOZ?

A proud moment for me is the realisation that I am able to create jewellery that truly resonates with people on a deep emotional level. When customers share how a piece has marked a significant moment in their lives, whether it’s an engagement or wedding, a milestone or a remembrance of a loved one, it reinforces why I started BOZ in the first place. Knowing that the jewellery we create becomes part of someone’s personal story and carries such meaningful significance is deeply fulfilling. And of course, overcoming the challenges of relocating to the USA while managing a business in Nigeria was a huge accomplishment. It required adaptability, resilience and unwavering faith. Being able to continue growing BOZ despite those challenges, showed me the strength of my vision and the power of perseverance. In all, it is not just the business milestones I am proud of, it is the relationships, the stories and the impact that BOZ is having on the lives of others. These are what make the journey so meaningful.

What is the one message or value you would like your customers to take away from your brand and your jewellery?

I want customers to understand that at BOZ, we prioritise quality, craftsmanship and authenticity. Each piece is created with intention, using ethically sourced materials and with meticulous attention to detail. More than just an item, our jewellery is a timeless treasure that holds personal significance, creating lasting memories for generations to come. I want them to feel a deep, emotional connection to their jewellery, knowing that it represents something meaningful in their lives. That is the true value of BOZ, to create pieces that reflect not just beauty but love, legacy and lasting memories.

Day never to be forgotten and why?

A day that will never be forgotten for me is the day I lost my son, Benjamin Oshoneh Zekeri. It was a moment of deep sorrow, yet also a defining point in my journey. It reshaped my perspective on life and business. His memory inspires the love and purpose I infuse into every piece of jewellery at BOZ. The pain I felt became a driving force to create pieces that hold meaning beyond aesthetics, pieces that tell stories of love, connection and cherished memories. This day, though heartbreaking, serves as a constant reminder of the importance of family, love and the impact of the moments we share with those we hold dear.

Share the role advertising/influencers play in promoting your brand? How important is it to get it right here?

I must say they play a significant role in promoting BOZ and expanding its reach. In today’s digital age, they are vital tools for connecting with a wider audience and building brand awareness. For a jewellery brand like BOZ, it is not just about showcasing beautiful products, but about telling a story, connecting emotionally with customers and creating a brand that resonates with them. In short, advertising and influencers are essential to growing BOZ’s visibility and reach, but getting it right means staying true to the brand’s essence. It’s about finding the right partners and channels to authentically connect with the audience and communicate the deeper value of the jewellery we create.

Business in the Nigerian environment, how is it going for you and what can be done better?

Running a business in the Nigerian environment has its unique set of challenges and opportunities and for BOZ, it’s been both an exciting and demanding journey. One of the biggest challenges is the economic instability, including the fluctuating exchange rates and inflation, which can affect the cost of sourcing materials, pricing and overall profitability. It is essential to stay adaptable and be strategic about pricing and cost management to ensure sustainability. There is also the need to continuously educate the Nigerian market on the value of fine jewellery, especially when it comes to the craftsmanship and emotional significance behind each piece. Many customers are still drawn to lower cost, mass produced jewellery, which makes it important for brands like BOZ to emphasise quality, artistry and the personal connection that fine jewellery represents. I believe the Nigerian government can provide more support to small businesses, particularly in terms of tax breaks and funding for entrepreneurs in creative industries. Additionally, creating a more stable regulatory environment for businesses would help ease some of the logistical and operational challenges.

Concluding words

I invite you to explore our collections and experience the craftsmanship and passion that define BOZ Jewellery. I also want to acknowledge the grace and guidance of God throughout this journey. His wisdom and strength have been instrumental in shaping BOZ into what it is today. I am deeply grateful for His blessings He has bestowed upon this endeavour.
