Who is John Azuta-Mbata? The Rivers State indigene elected as Ohanaeze Ndigbo president

John Azuta-Mbata, a former senator and public administrator, has emerged as the president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

His election, held in Enugu on January 10, 2025, marks a historic moment as he becomes the first leader of the group from Rivers State, a region within the South-South zone.

Born in January 1960, Azuta-Mbata holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan.

He began his public service career with notable roles, including serving on the governing council of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Port Harcourt.

His political journey took off in 1999 when he was elected as the Senator representing Rivers East under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), coinciding with Nigeria’s return to democracy.

Re-elected in 2003, he served two terms, during which he held key positions on Senate committees, including Defense, Finance & Appropriation (as vice-chairman), and Works & Housing.

Azuta-Mbata’s legislative tenure was not without challenges. In 2005, he faced allegations of involvement in a budget bribery scandal, which led to prolonged legal battles. However, in 2019, the Court of Appeal in Abuja cleared him of all charges, reaffirming his integrity.

As the newly elected leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Azuta-Mbata steps into a role with immense responsibility. His vast experience in governance and public service is expected to guide the organisation in tackling critical issues affecting the Igbo community, including unity, socio-economic development, security and political representation.

His election represents a shift towards inclusivity within Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as it underscores the contributions of Igbos in the South-South region to the larger Igbo agenda.

Azuta-Mbata has pledged to prioritise cohesion and innovation, positioning the organisation as a stronger voice for Ndigbo in Nigeria and beyond.

With a proven track record in public service and a clear vision for the future, John Azuta-Mbata’s leadership is anticipated to usher in a new era of progress for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
