Drake retools lawsuit, sues Universal Music for defaming him

After pulling his petition towards Universal Music Group (UMG) this morning, Drake has launched a new suit at UMG with more of a focus on how the label used Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” song to make Drake look bad.

Drake’s camp claims that UMG published “Not Like Us” on purpose to publicly accuse the rapper of being a pedophile and then call for violence towards the musician. It’s worth noting that UMG currently represents both Drake and Lamar.

The Canadian artist says that the record label chose greed over his safety. He even claims that a few days after the song was released, there was a shooting at his house and multiple break-ins.

Drake’s team suggests that UMG pit the two artists against each other to help bolster its notations with each rapper since their contracts are up soon. On the Lamar side, it proved that UMG can still push Lamar’s sales. On Drake’s side, the musician accuses the label of devaluing his music ahead of the contract negotiations in 2025.

The lawsuit’s main focus is on UMG for releasing the song despite the allegations being false. It also still pushes the idea that UMG artificially inflated the streaming numbers and paid to have Lamar’s hit played on the radio.

While Drake’s camp withdrew the earlier petition today leading many to assume that the rapper didn’t find any evidence of pay-to-play or bot use, it seems like those allegations are still on the table.

The Verge also notes that Drake’s lawyer is the same person who defended the owners of the restaurant at the centre of the Pizzagate conspiracy. And the team is calling the shooting at Drake’s mansion “the 2024 equivalent of ‘Pizzagate.’”
