Google just blessed Pixel 6, 7 and original Fold users with two more years of software updates.

In a quiet update to its Pixel software support page (spotted by 9to5Google), Google bumped up some Pixel devices from the old promise of three years of Android upgrades to five years. That time limit started when phones first became available on the Google Store in the U.S.

“These phones, including Pixel Fold, will get updates for 5 years starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops,” reads Google’s support page.

When Google first launched the phones, it promised three years of Android upgrades and five years of security patches. That was initially an increase from the prior three-year support timeline. However, Google hasn’t extended the security patch promise, so it remains at five years for these phones.

The Pixel Tablet, unfortunately, didn’t get this change.

The move comes after Google promised seven years of software updates and patches for the Pixel 8 and 9 series. Overall, it’s great to see Google extend software support timelines, and I hope it pushes more manufacturers to follow suit.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that just because Google officially promised support and updates for five years doesn’t mean we won’t see updates beyond that point. There’s no guarantee, but in the past, we’ve seen Google push updates to Pixel phones even after their support window lapsed.
