Virgin Plus and Fido copy Koodo, launch $39/60GB plans

Virgin Plus and Fido have copied Koodo’s $39/60GB plan.

On Feb. 28, 2025, both providers updated their respective websites to list the new plan, though there are some notable differences.

Bell-owned Virgin’s $39/60GB plan is listed as only available for new activations. Virgin, unlike Koodo and Fido, doesn’t offer autopay discounts, so the plan is actually $39. The plan includes unlimited Canada-wide calling and international texting (sent from Canada).

Moreover, the plan includes unlimited calling to the U.S., Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, and U.K. That’s a major differentiator from Koood’s $39/60GB plan. Another big difference is that Virgin’s plan offers 4G data speeds capped at up to 150Mbps, slightly faster than Koodo’s 100Mbps speed cap.

Virgin Plus $39/60GB plan and other options.

Weirdly, Virgin still offered its $45/60GB plan at the time of writing, so be careful not to accidentally get it instead of the $39 option. Aside from the price, the two plans are identical. Virgin continues to offer a $55/80GB plan as well. These plans are all for bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers — those looking to get a phone must pick from $50/60GB or $55/80GB options.

Rogers-owned Fido, on the other hand, has added a 40GB monthly data bonus to its $39/20GB plan. Although Fido doesn’t list an expiry for the bonus data, the offer certainly feels less permanent than Virgin and Koodo. Fido did, however, list March 3rd as the end date for the promotion, so customers looking to pick up Fido’s version of the $39/60GB plan will need to act fast.

Other notable differences include that Fido’s price includes a $10/mo automatic payments discount, and Fido caps its 4G data speeds at 150Mbps. Fido also only includes Canada-wide calling and international texting in the $39 plan. To get more calling options, you’ll need to jump up to the $45/60GB or $55/80GB options.

How do these $39/60GB plans compare?

Ranking these offers overall, I think Virgin takes the top spot thanks to the calling bonus and lack of autopay discount.

Koodo and Fido are effectively tied, depending what you want out of your plan. Fido offers slightly faster data and international texting, while Koodo customers can pick a free perk from options like rollover data, premium voicemail or international texting. (For someone like me who doesn’t text internationally, Koodo’s perks offer different options that I’d actually use, so I’d probably go that route.)

Other notable benefits include Koodo’s Stream+ bundle with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ — Koodo customers get a $5/mo discount on this, but Telus did just crank up the price of the bundle. Fido benefits include things like five hours of unlimited data per month. Finally, Fido charges a $75 activation fee, while Koodo charges $70 but also dings customers with a $10 SIM card fee. But both providers waive the connection fee for online activations.

Not that it matters too much — you should probably go with Virgin over either of them, or even better, Freedom Mobile or Public Mobile. Both of those providers currently have $35/60GB 5G plans with included Canada/U.S./Mexico roaming, making them the best value options by far.
