The swift advancement of artificial intelligence is transforming industries, with a significant impact on AI-driven software development.
Businesses are leveraging AI to streamline processes, enhance security and foster innovation in a highly competitive environment. A key trend emerging in this space is the focus on tailored AI models, designed to address specific domains such as software development, where efficiency and specialization are crucial to success, according to Jason Warner (pictured), co-founder and chief executive officer of Poolside Inc.
“Poolside is frontier AI, so think Anthropic, OpenAI, but we’re focused on the domain of software,” Warner said. “We have the full stack, so foundation models, middleware and applications as well.”
Warner spoke with theCUBE Research’s John Furrier for theCUBE’s “Cloud AWS re:Invent Coverage,” during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. Warner shared insights into how Poolside is pioneering AI applications in software development, offering organizations customized solutions that integrate seamlessly with their existing systems.
Redefining AI-driven software development
Poolside takes a domain-specific approach to AI, emphasizing a deeper understanding of software development’s complexities. Unlike general-purpose AI models, Poolside’s foundation models are optimized for AI-driven software development, prioritizing accuracy and relevance for this specialized field, Warner explained.
“What this boils down to … we [all] have the same data, but we’re orienting all of our training toward software development. What that means in practice is just that, as we continue our training, we’re saying, ‘Hey, we want our model to be the best at software development,’” he said. “We happen to know about butterfly anatomy, but we’re okay if it forgets things about butterfly anatomy, if you’re preferentially treating software assets.”
A key differentiator in Poolside’s approach is the ability to deliver advanced AI capabilities without requiring access to clients’ proprietary data. This is a critical feature in a world where data privacy and security are top priorities for enterprises. Many organizations are hesitant to adopt AI due to the potential risks of sharing sensitive data. Poolside overcomes this barrier by generating its own synthetic data using proprietary techniques, ensuring both data security and model quality.
“This is a have our cake and eat it too scenario,” Warner said. “Effectively, this is the reason why we can go to a customer and say, ‘We don’t need to get access to your data,’ because we can generate so much synthetic code data and software data that we can work our way out of the data hole.”
Collaboration with major cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services Inc., is central to Poolside’s strategy, according to Warner. These partnerships provide enterprises with cutting-edge AI tools while maintaining control over their environments.
“Poolside is available in a first-party offering on AWS … [customers] don’t have to get familiar with a startup … they can commit, spend [and] retire their AWS spend by buying Poolside,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Warner envisions a collaborative AI landscape where specialized models work together to solve increasingly complex challenges. By integrating multiple models, each excelling in its domain, businesses can harness the full potential of AI while overcoming the limitations of individual solutions.
“This is the train that we’re on. It’s just a matter of time until all the pieces have to come into play.” he said.
