Over 42,000 Canadians have signed a petition to bar U.S. President Donald Trump from entering Canada ahead of the G7 Summit in Alberta this June.
The petition argues that Trump is a convicted felon and that Canadian law prevents felons from entering the country.
“Donald Trump is a convicted felon who is threatening Canada’s Sovereignty. He has also stressed that border security along the Canadian border is a priority for him and we agree. We can’t allow convicted felons from other countries across our border,” reads the petition.
However, Canada is expected to welcome Trump and other G7 members like President of France Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Kananaskis, Alta. in June. The G7 is an informal grouping of seven advanced economies that includes France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., the U.S. and, of course, Canada.
This isn’t the first call for Trump to be barred from Canada. Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also proposed banning Trump from the summit. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shot the idea down, calling it “facile.” However, Trudeau’s resignation means he won’t be prime minister come June.
The petition follows a similar one targeting tech billionaire Elon Musk, which sought to have Musk’s Canadian citizenship revoked. It prompted Musk to claim Canada “wasn’t real” in a since-deleted tweet. Nazi-saluting Musk has played an instrumental role in the Trump administration while spouting hateful rhetoric on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Musk’s far-right alignment and involvement with Trump has prompted many Tesla owners to attempt to distance themselves from the billionaire.
Unfortunately, these petitions are unlikely to have much impact aside from giving Canadians an opportunity to express their displeasure with Trump and Musk. It’s clear the Canadian government has no plan to bar Trump from the G7 Summit, regardless of how many signatures the petition gets.
That said, it’ll be cathartic to see the petition gain signatures, and with the ongoing trade war and tariffs, many Canadians will likely agree with the petition, which notes that “we do not want Donald Trump to visit Canada under any circumstances.”
