Apple’s Actively Working On Macs And Vision Pro With Cellular Support

Apple is making bold moves to develop its own modem technology, aiming to reduce reliance on Qualcomm. According to Bloomberg, this multi-year plan could significantly reshape Apple’s devices, with the first steps rolling out as early as next year.

The first iteration of Apple’s in-house cellular modem is set to debut in 2024 with the iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air, and base model iPad. In 2025, Apple plans to introduce a higher-end version with faster 5G connectivity for the iPhone 18 Pro.

As part of this effort, Apple is exploring the possibility of adding cellular connectivity to the Mac for the first time. This would free Mac users from relying solely on Wi-Fi to stay connected.

However, don’t expect it too soon as cellular-equipped Macs likely won’t arrive before 2026. By that time Apple’s second generation modem with enhanced speed and efficiency is expected to power this feature.

Apple is also considering extending cellular capabilities to future Vision Pro models. This could pave the way for standalone AR/VR headsets, eliminating the need for constant tethering to other devices. While lightweight AR glasses with built-in cellular support remain on Apple’s radar, such technology is still years away.

Bringing cellular connectivity to Macs and AR devices would mark a significant expansion of Apple’s ecosystem. It aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to create a seamless, connected experience across all devices.

With these updates in the pipeline, Apple is signaling big plans for the future of on-the-go connectivity.
