Bell Media lays off nearly 100 workers

Bell Media laid off nearly 100 workers, though the company says this recent round of layoffs won’t result in cancelled news programs.

The Toronto Star first reported on the layoffs, which were confirmed to the publication by a Bell Media spokesperson:

“As part of Bell Media’s ongoing transformation to a digital media and content leader, we can confirm that 98 potions are impacted, predominantly in service and corporate departments. Included in the total are 44 union roles, with the majority being offered voluntary separation packages by Bell Media.”

The spokesperson mentioned that no CTV News journalists had been affected by the changes, and no news programs have been cancelled. The layoffs are mostly impacting workers in Toronto and Montreal.

MobileSyrup contacted Bell to learn more about the recent round of layoffs and will update this story with additional information at it becomes available.

Earlier this year, Bell offered a voluntary separation to 1,200 union workers. Additionally, Bell has slashed 7,000 jobs nationwide in less than two years, according to a newswire from Manitoba’s Team union.

That figure includes 4,800 job cuts from a restructuring plan in 2024, which saw 1,000 layoffs at The Source, 120 layoffs at Expertech, and a 50-person cut at Bell Media.

The last several years have seen multiple rounds of job cuts at Bell Media. In 2022, the company laid off CTV Vancouver anchors and radio hosts. It also cut jobs in Toronto newsrooms and at sports radio stations in 2021.
