CCI focuses on antitrust cases in digital markets amid new challenges

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has confirmed that it is actively investigating several antitrust cases in digital markets, reflecting the rising complexities brought about by the rapid growth of the digital economy.

In its annual report for 2023-24 tabled in the Lok Sabha this past week, the competition watchdog emphasised that the exponential growth of computing power and widespread internet access have driven the emergence of digital markets with innovative business models, creating novel challenges for competition law and policy.

New business models based on cutting-edge technologies have reshaped market dynamics, necessitating a nuanced approach to competition regulation, the CCI has said. 

The Commission is currently examining multiple antitrust cases in digital markets to address these emerging concerns, according to the annual report.

The advent of the digital economy has introduced practices such as platform dominance, data monopolisation, and anti-competitive agreements in digital ecosystems.
