Electric ferry boat services between Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port to launch next month

Electric ferry boat services between Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port are scheduled to begin in January 2025.

The air-conditioned ferry boat that can attain speeds of 12 knots and operate for three hours on a single charge, will reduce the travel time between the two destinations by 20 minutes, an official release from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) said. JNPA will be in charge of issuing tickets for the ferry boat that can accommodate 20-24 passengers at a time. JNPA has procured the boat on lease, official sources said.

Made of fibre-reinforced polymer and about 12-15 meters in length, the ferry boat will take about 75 minutes to charge fully, the release added. “The project aims at launching a zero-emission environment-friendly ferry boat for the public. The new pollution-free and environment-friendly boat, backed by Harit Sagar or the ‘Green Port’ initiative, focuses on sustainable port operations,” JNPA said.
