FA Cup: Danny Welbeck fires Brighton into quarter-finals at Newcastle

Danny Welbeck’s extra-time winner sent Brighton into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in a fiery encounter that saw both teams reduced to 10 men.

Alexander Isak gave Newcastle the lead from the penalty spot in the fifth-round tie at St James’ Park, but former Magpies winger Yankuba Minteh equalized before halftime, setting the stage for an intense second half.

The game turned chaotic in the final minutes of regulation when Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon was shown a red card for violent conduct after shoving Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke in the head. Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey followed suit, receiving a second yellow card to level the playing field at 10 men apiece.

Despite the tension, Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton emerged victorious in extra time, with Welbeck’s late strike sealing their place in the quarter-finals.

The Seagulls, who have never won the FA Cup, last reached the final in 1983, losing to Manchester United in a replay. Their win at St James’ Park marks their second triumph at the venue this season and extends their winning streak to five matches since their 7-0 thrashing at Nottingham Forest.

For Newcastle, the defeat prolongs their long wait for silverware, having not won a domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup. Their last major triumph came in the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Unless Newcastle successfully appeal Gordon’s red card, the forward will miss the League Cup final against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Wembley on March 16.

Brighton will learn their quarter-final opponents after Manchester United’s clash with Fulham.
