There’s a new iPhone called the 16e at the bottom end of Apple’s iPhone lineup, and it might signify broader pricing restructuring coming later this year with the iPhone 17 series.
Apple has sold a wide variety of smartphones in Canada since 2009. Some are aimed at high-end buyers with cash to burn, and others have more affordable pricing angles in an effort to attract budget Android users.
This chat will change slightly when we re-add the 2025 pricing after the September iPhone event.
There has also been a relatively consistent throughline of older iPhones sticking around, with prices dropping year after year. For example, the iPhone 11 launched for $979 in 2019, but by 2021, Apple was selling it for $679.
We learned some other stuff in our research as well. For example, in March 2015, Apple bumped up the cost of the iPhone in Canada to better align with the U.S. exchange rate. So before the iPhone 6s even hit the market, the cost of a mainline iPhone went from $749 to $839. Then, when the 6s hit Canada a few months later, the price went up again to $899.
The vast majority of this data was gathered directly from Apple’s website using the Wayback machine. The pricing was picked from late September to December to ensure that each calendar year’s pricing reflected the iPhone that was released. Other data was also pulled from posts from MobileSyrup and iPhone in Canada.
Overall, both charts show that Apple is working hard to sell more expensive iPhones. Still, when you look at the iPhone 16 adjusted for inflation, it’s not actually that far off from the iPhone 6, which came out in 2014, and only $159 more expensive than the iPhone 3GS from 2009.
Where Apple moves the markers are at the top and bottom end of its ecosystem. The iPhone SE kept the bottom fairly anchored to $600, but ever since the iPhone X, the company has been pushing the price of its top-end phones higher and higher. For example, the iPhone 7 Plus, which was one of the first premium iPhones, was only $1,334 when adjusted for inflation in 2025. Compare that to the $1,749 iPhone 16 Pro Max, and you can see how Apple is pushing costs up.
