Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), the country’s second-largest car manufacturer, plans to establish approximately 600 public EV fast charging stations across India over the next seven years. The expansion will prioritise key highways and major cities to address the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
By the end of 2024, the company aims to have over 50 DC fast public charging stations operational, spanning highways, cities, and dealerships, according to a company statement. So far, its charging network has supported around 50,000 sessions, dispensing over 7.30 lakh units of energy to more than 10,000 Hyundai and non-Hyundai EV users.
Robust growth
“The EV market is expected to see robust growth by 2030. Studies by HMIL show that customers are often hesitant to use EVs for long-distance highway travel due to limited charging infrastructure. To address this, we are installing fast chargers on major highways and in key cities while investing in infrastructure to meet the anticipated demand for electric vehicles,” said Jae Wan Ryu, Function Head – Corporate Planning.
HMIL has also signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to establish 100 EV charging stations across the state by 2027. Of these, 10 stations will be operational by the end of 2024. These 24×7 facilities will be accessible to all EV users via the myHyundai app.
Currently, three stations are functional at Spencer Plaza and BSR Mall in Chennai, and Hotel Seasons in Tiruvannamalai, with seven more set to become operational soon. As of November 2024, HMIL has sold over 4,061 EVs, including its popular Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Hyundai KONA models.
