Hyundai to integrate Made-in-India AGM batteries in domestic models

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), the second largest car maker in India, is set to incorporate Made-in-India AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) four-wheeler batteries, developed by Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd., across its domestic product line up.

These India-manufactured AGM batteries will serve as SLI (Starting, Lighting, and Ignition) batteries. According to a statement, AGM batteries demonstrated approximately 150 per cent greater durability compared to conventional CMF (Complete Maintenance Free) batteries, with an extended operational temperature range and superior lifespan.

HMIL plans to begin equipping its models with these locally produced AGM batteries in the fourth quarter of FY 2024-2025. “HMIL is set to become the first auto OEM in India to integrate indigenously manufactured AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery technology into its products, made by Amara Raja,” stated Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer – HMIL.

HMIL has been strengthening its localisation efforts through a dedicated team, collaborating with over 194 vendors to source more than 1,238 components and trim parts for its Chennai manufacturing facility. Simultaneously, it is implementing a targeted localisation strategy for its forthcoming plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, the statement noted.
