iOS 18.2 requirement ups how much storage Apple Intelligence needs

Running Apple Intelligence comes with a storage cost, and it has gone up to 7GB with iOS 18.2.

Apple Intelligence runs locally; therefore, it needs to have access to local AI models. When iOS 18.1 was released, Apple Intelligence only used 4GB, but since then, it has gone up by 3GB with the inclusion of Genmoji, more Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.

This indicates that each new Apple Intelligence feature might take up more of your device’s storage. So, while 7GB might not seem like much now, it could balloon in a few years. That said, my iPhone is running the iOS 18.3 beta and only uses 3.13GB of space for Apple Intelligence. This suggests that Apple’s 7GB storage requirement may be factoring in future updates.

Ideally, Apple will increase the base storage of its products. Most already start at 128GB, but the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at 256GB. That said, it seems likely that the company still sees 128GB as the floor for storage. When the company upgraded the iPad mini with Apple Intelligence support in late 2024, it bumped it up from 64GB to 128GB.

If you don’t use the features, you can turn them off in the Apple Intelligence area in the settings app on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. After that, you might need to factory reset your phone to really clear out the space. You can also view the exact amount of space that AI uses on your phone or tablet by going to Settings > General > Phone Storage, scrolling all the way down to the bottom, and selecting iOS.
