Maharashtra reports highest number of digital fraud attempts: IDfy report

Maharashtra reported the highest number of fraud attempts for video KYC verification between September and October as per a report by IDfy integrated identity platform. Over 23,406 fraud attempts were reported in September-October and 17,164 attempts in March- April.

The findings, based on approximately 5.7 million Video KYC verifications across India, highlighted the number of times a fraudulent individual tried to onboard a platform, either by stealing someone else’s identity or tampering KYC documents.

In terms of volume of fraud attempts, IDfy found nearly half of the total fraud attempts were concentrated in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.

Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Rajasthan Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar dominated the top 10 fraud rankings in April as well as October, suggesting established fraud hotspots in these States.

However, border regions like Alwar, Deeg, West Champaran, Dakshin Dinajpur and Birbhum persistently demonstrated higher fraud attempts compared to inland areas. According to the report, operating from border areas makes it easy for fraudsters to escape to the adjoining State.

Ashok Hariharan, CEO and Co-Founder, IDfy said, “The study underscores the critical need for adaptive fraud detection strategies. Fraudsters are constantly evolving, and today’s hotspot may vanish tomorrow. Businesses must remain agile and proactive to stay ahead of shifting trends.”
