Many Canadians are receiving a $36 direct deposit from Meta

If you’ve noticed a direct deposit of $36.29 from Meta, you’re not alone. According to CBC, the company that Facebook hired to manage the process says you might have received the direct deposit as part of a class action settlement with Meta about the company allegedly using people’s Facebook photos without their consent as part of an advertising tool.

To be an eligible member of the class action, you must be a resident of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, or Newfoundland and Labrador from January 1st, 2021, through May 31st, 2014. However, it’s alright if you don’t currently live in one those provinces.

If you submitted a claim to participate in the class action, you should have received a transfer of $36.29 from MNP. This case took over a decade to wrap up, and there are more than 900,000 claims.

Nick Greenfield of MNP Limited, a full-service chartered professional accountancy advisory firm, says that you should not accept the payment if you did not live in one of the four provinces during the class period. You can e-mail the claims administrator directly with questions here: facebooksettlement@mnp.ca.
