MediaTek launched Dimensity 8400, a premium smartphone chip that builds on the AI capabilities of Dimensity 9400 at a more affordable price. Smartphones powered by this chip will be available in the market by the end of 2024. The chip provides an All Big Core design that allows processing of intensive tasks on devices and is paired with an NPU 880 to support mainstream LLM/SLM/LMMs across the globe.
The smartphone chip has an eight-core Arm Cortex-A725 processor operating at up to 3.25GHz, providing 41 per cent higher multi-core performance and reducing peak power use by 44 per cent compared to its predecessor. The chip particularly supports immersive gaming experiences using a Arm Mali®-G720 GPU that offers 24 per cent higher peak performance and 42 percent greater power efficiency than the Dimensity 8300.
Performance and efficiency
Dr Yenchi Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit said, “Our All Big Core design, which we’ve also integrated into our flagship chips, highlights the impressive performance and efficiency that can go hand-in-hand so consumers don’t have to compromise.”
Main features
The latest chip also uses Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), enabling developers to create agentic AI applications that anticipate user needs. The built-in MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP leverages QPD remosaic technology to capture more light, focus faster and more accurately, and produce high-resolution images. The chip also supports HDR recording throughout the entire zoom range so users can take incredible videos.
Other features include 5G-A modem which supports up to 3CC-CA and up to 5.17Gbps performance, a Network Observation System (NOS) technology for precise 5G/Wi-Fi switching, optimizing network connectivity and WQHD+ displaye resolution up to 144Hz with dual screen support.
