Monitra Healthcare’s AI-powered patch offers real-time heart monitoring for early diagnosis

Move over bulky, cumbersome heart monitors; there’s this patch placed on your chest to capture transient abnormal heartbeats, which often disappear, making it challenging for doctors to diagnose the condition.

Monitra Healthcare Private Limited, a three-year-old startup, has developed this patch to address this challenge. This sleek, discreet band, worn comfortably on the chest, continuously records an electrocardiogram (ECG), capturing those often elusive transient episodes – brief, sudden heart rhythm changes. This high-resolution data is then analysed using AI and validated by experts to ensure accuracy

“Many people experience fleeting heart irregularities that are difficult to diagnose,” explains Aparna Bhogu, Co-founder of Monitra Healthcare.

“Our device provides continuous monitoring and precise data, enabling early detection and intervention,” she told businessline.

The startup, housed at T-Hub, has 55 employees. “We are planning to hire 100 more in the next two years to support product and geographical expansion,” she said.

She said the product has garnered significant traction since its launch, with leading hospitals and cardiologists in Hyderabad adopting the technology. The device’s superior resolution and accuracy, coupled with the validation of results and checks for false positives, make it stand out in the market, she said.

“The output comes with high-resolution recording, capturing subtle nuances in the ECG signal that might go unnoticed with traditional monitors,” she said.

AI-powered, human-verified

The device uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse ECG data and generate reports. However, the company also employs certified technicians to review the AI-generated reports and correct false positives and false negatives. False positives occur when the AI incorrectly identifies a non-existent event, while false negatives occur when it fails to detect an actual event. Human validation ensures the reports’ accuracy and reliability.

“This blend of technological prowess and human expertise ensures that patients and doctors receive the most reliable information possible,” she said.

The startup is working on a new product that can capture ECG data from multiple viewpoints, providing a holistic picture of the heart’s electrical activity. This technology, still in development, promises to equip doctors with an even better view of the signals.

The startup is also working on a product that can track SpO2, respiration, brain activity (EEG), and even body temperature.

Besides expanding its presence in the country, the startup is looking to tap into the opportunities in the US and other international markets.
