Reddit Review – A Waste of Internet Space –

Reddit is a vast online community where users can sign up to an online forum platform to engage in discussions about virtually any topic imaginable. It’s like a bustling marketplace of ideas, conversations, news, and entertainment and a central place where you can find basically a forum on any topic you can imagine. A great concept but this also comes with its flaws. The site has become a waste of space on the Internet, a dark space on the internet where trolls and keyboard warriors live, where the intelligent people now know to steer clear, or they too will lose brain cells every second they spend there. This will be a harsh Reddit Review explaining reasons why the platform has become irrelevant and a wasteland of unwanted junk, news and information. I can tell you that every time I have been searching the internet for answers and information on a topic, reddit has provided no value and I have found that information is always found elsewhere easier and more accurate.

I joined Reddit many years ago, it was once a useful place, you could get help with all manner of things, now though the majority of it is just pure vile trash, it’s run by conspiracy nuts, it’s mods are power hungry arseholes and it’s not a safe place to be.

Try ask a question on the platform!….. Even when using the platform to ask a question or start a conversation topic, I have been disappointed every time with the quality of answers and reply’s that are presented to me. Here is a quick Reddit review of the site from not just my point of view but by many others:

Reddit Review

  1. Lack of Content Quality:
    • Reddit hosts a vast array of content, but not all of it is high-quality.
    • Repetitive posts and memes can frustrate users seeking fresh discussions.
    • Even if you are after an answer to a question, in most cases they can be half answers that you need to go elsewhere to complete.
    • Lack of valuable content means you spend valuable time sifting through useless information.
    • I have read many stories whereby someone has posted a great comment and receives many upvotes only to for this comment to removed or the member banned. The real quality content is then being removed.
  2. Anonymity and Toxic Behavior:
    • Reddit allows users to remain anonymous, which can lead to a lack of accountability.
    • Some subreddits become breeding grounds for toxic behavior, including trolling, hate speech, and cyberbullying.
    • Site is full of Trolls – There’s a minority on here that’s made up of trolls, unhappy and angry people. They visit the site to vent or to deliberately inflame.
  3. Mob Mentality, Hive mind and Groupthink:
    • The karma system encourages upvoting and downvoting, but it can sometimes foster mob mentality.
    • Popular opinions get amplified, while dissenting voices may be silenced.
    • Certain subreddits become echo chambers where dissenting opinions are downvoted.
    • The hivemind effect can discourage nuanced discussions.
  4. Moderation inconsistencies and Power trips:
    • Some subreddits have gatekeepers who mock newcomers or enforce strict entry requirements.
    • Elitism can alienate new users.
    • Moderators ban people for things others do daily. But, they have their favorites and certain moderators pick and choose only to enforce the rules on those whose opinions they don’t like.
    • Some users feel that moderation decisions are arbitrary or biased.
    • Some moderators just need to relax – I once posted a valuable question hoping for an answer (and when discussing this with my work colleagues, they were interested in finding the answer also) but because it was a tricky question that many users may not know the answer, the moderator removed the question for not bring any value. Very frustrating!!!
    • There is no room for sarcasm or cynicism, let alone honest criticism of controversial issues.
    • Many users complain that moderators are rude and many times post rude responses when a question is asked. Some moderators will remove posts for no real reasons other than the mod disagrees with your view.
    • Too many posts get removed for not even breaking any rules.
  5. Intolerant Echo Chamber
    • Reddit used to be an awesome place, but it has turned into an echo chamber with little tolerance for people with differing views. You can spend years building up karma and communities just to have them ban your account on some minor issue. If you are a community builder you are honestly just wasting your time on Reddit. You own nothing there and can have everything taken away from you on a whim.
  6. Privacy Concerns:
    • Reddit collects user data, and some people worry about privacy breaches.
    • The platform has faced controversies related to data sharing.
  7. Inconsistencies everywhere you look:
    • Reddit’s content policies can seem arbitrary, inconsistent or confusing.
    • Some users feel that certain subreddits get preferential treatment.
    • You are given a limited time to have your question open. After a time, Reddit will close your question and no more answers will be accepted. This is a very stupid policy.
    • Moderators volunteer their time to manage subreddits, but many moderators are enforcing rules inconsistently.

Below is a perfect example I stumbled across that proves the thesis of the article.

Remember, this Reddit Review and these criticisms don’t apply universally. Many Redditors find immense value in the platform’s diverse communities and discussions. But the bottom line is that for a platform that should encourage communities and connections to share useful information, the platform has become somewhere that prevents freedom of speech and breeding grounds for toxic behavior, including trolling, hate speech, and cyberbullying. If you value your mental health stay away from Reddit, it will suck your will to live and leave you a shell of your former self.
