Surge in renewable energy capacity expected as 127 GW projects under construction

As much as 127,050 MW of renewable energy capacity is under construction today; another 89,690 MW is “under various stages of tendering”, the Ministry of Power informed the Lok Sabha today.  

These numbers do not include large hydro and nuclear. Hydroelectric projects (not counting pumped hydro plants, which are essentially storage facilities) worth 13,997 MW are under construction and another 24,225 MW under planning.  

India has made a global commitment to have 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity by 2030. Today, the country has 203,220 MW of renewable energy capacity including 92,119 MW of solar and 47,716 MW of wind, as well as biomass and small hydro plants.
