Much doom and gloom was aimed at the electric car world in 2024. But according to the International Energy Agency, electric car sales could hit around 17 million for 2024, accounting for more than one in five cars sold worldwide. The US has seen growth, with luxury EVs in particular continuing to sell well.

But the statistic of the year has to come from China, where EV sales have reached a tipping point as half of all new cars sold there can now be powered by batteries. Such is the rapid uptake of EVs in the region that it has shifted the views of oil forecasters, where decline in demand sees predictions of Chinese gasoline consumption dropping by 4 to 5 percent a year through 2030.

Despite the incoming US administration’s plans to end EV tax credits, and funding for charging infrastructure possibly being clawed back, the global drive toward EVs will only increase. And with that firmly in mind, let’s take a look at our pick of the best EVs coming in 2025.

Renault 5 Turbo 3E

Renault is bringing back the iconic 5 Turbo, and in some style, too. The 5 Turbo 3E will be based on Renault’s well-reviewed all-electric 5 E-Tech, only the front-wheel drive, 120-horsepower specs have been upgraded to rear-wheel-drive and a shocking 500 hp. This will result in supercar-worthy speeds of 0 to 62 mph time of 3.5 seconds to go with the pimped bodywork. Joyously, it’s worth pointing out here that the image above is not a concept; this is the final production design. The bad news? These Turbos will be extremely limited and expensive, possibly north of $150,000.

Range Rover EV

It’s been a long wait. But finally we get to see what a full-electric Range Rover looks like. The answer is: very much like the ICE version, which is no bad thing. It will be the quietest and most refined Range Rover made yet, apparently, and crucially will match the performance of the V8 model, which means you should expect 0 to 60 mph in around 4.6 seconds. In November, Land Rover conducted prototype testing in the deserts of the United Arab Emirates, in temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, trying out new torque and thermal management systems. Pricing speculation sees a start figure around $120,000 and then up to $160,000.

Hitting the roads in February, the A6 e-tron comes in both Sportback and Avant body styles, and will be available in both the standard A6 and high performance S6 versions. The base model is 362 hp and rear-wheel only, then there’s a 422-hp all-wheel-drive model. Finally, a 543-hp S6 e-tron will launch from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. Expect 350 miles of range and 800-volt architecture for rapid charging. In the cabin on the passenger side, an optional 14.5-inch display lets the non-drivers game or watch videos.

BMW’s well-received Vision Neue Klasse X concept hits production in 2025, and it will sit below the brand’s flagship electric SUV iX. Rumor has it that it will be given the iX3 badge. The concept car in this update to BMW’s design has a slimmer version of the iconic “kidney” grille, reversing a trend that saw the noses of BMWs getting larger and larger, almost to comic proportions. Hopefully this will make it to final production model, as this 2025 style has more than a whiff of classic Bimmers such as the 2002. An new 800-volt architecture (which is fast becoming a yardstick in EVs), should increase range by more than a third compared to the current model.

After the huge success that was the Kia EV9, it’s hardly surprising that many have been waiting to see if this—Hyundai’s entry into the three-row electric SUV segment and built on the same platform as the EV9—was going to be as good, or possibly even better. There’s a 215-hp single-motor base model as well as all-wheel drive version. Hyundai says it will give more than 330 miles of range from a 110.3-kWh battery pack in the long-range rear-wheel drive model, with charging from 10 to 80 percent in 24 minutes on a fast charger. The inside has “relaxation seats” in the first two rows, with the second row able to swivel round, plus an optional 14-speaker Bose system with 5.1 channel surround sound. Coming this spring.

Now the cat’s out the bag, the entire auto world has a view on the relative success or failure of Jaguar’s reinvention as an exclusive, high-end luxury EV brand. Whether you thought the ad campaign was intentionally polarizing or just plain bonkers, the real test comes in 2025 when Jaguar unveils the final design of the Type 00 concept before production begins the following year. Expect the exterior to be much the same. Expect the interior to not be. Jaguar is stating at least 430 miles of range and the ability to add 200 miles in 15 minutes on a fast charger. We do know something on dimensions and pricing: The car will be more than 5 meters long, just under 2.5 meters wide, and 1.3 meters high—and you’ll need at least £100,000 ($127,000) to buy one.

Two new versions of GMC’s all-electric Sierra Denali pickup land in 2025, both increasing the all-important range stats. The Denali Extended Range can manage 390 miles between charges, while the Max Range will supposedly be good for 460. Both feature 800-volt fast charging (seen in the likes of Kia and Hyundai EVs) at up to 350 kW for adding 100 miles of range in around 10 minutes. Zero to 60 mph is reached in less than 4.5 seconds. Air Ride adaptive suspension lets you raise and lower the truck up to two inches. But the real party trick? At low speeds it can crab walk; the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front, allowing you to creep diagonally.

Zero XB

New for 2025, the XB is part of Zero’s “All Access” initiative—essentially a scheme to make the brand’s expensive electric rides accessible to more punters. Suited for both off-road and urban riding, it’s got removable batteries, switchable traction control, and factory-tuned suspension. It’s also Zero’s lightest ride at just 63 kilograms and, supposedly, its most nimble model to date. Perhaps the biggest boon is the XB’s 2.4-kWh battery that can be swapped out in mere seconds and charged up in just three hours. Range is 47 miles on one full battery, and top speed is 28 mph. All for $4,195.

AC Ace Classic Electric

AC Cars, Britain’s oldest active vehicle manufacturer, has an electric version of its classic Ace roadster coming next year, and it looks mighty pretty. Staggeringly, it weighs just 1,134 kilograms. For context, MG’s electric Cyberster coupé weighs a much heavier 1,885 kilograms. Carbon fiber bodywork keeps the Ace’s heft down, so even with a 72-kWh battery and 300-bhp motor from TREMEC, it comes in only a shade heavier than its ICE sibling. That petrol version has a 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 4.6 seconds, and this electric promises to be faster still. AC says that the EV will be capable of 200 miles of range on a charge, and prices will start at a reasonable $275,000 with deliveries set to begin in spring.

The run-up to the production of Canoo’s cool Pickup has been going on so long that it feels like we have been looking at renders and images of the thing for decades. Still, it appears the brand’s EVs will finally land in 2025. Currently being tested by the US Army (well, a modified version), the Pickup has 550 horsepower across front and back, and 200 miles of range. You can spec a 6- to 8-foot pickup bed, while fast-charging from 20 to 80 percent will supposedly take 28 minutes. The camping setup—complete with roof tent—has particularly caught our eye.

Ferrari’s First EV

The world is watching and waiting for Ferrari to reveal its first fully electric car, and it looks like we will have to bide our time until late 2025 for the debut. It’s been confirmed that prototype testing has already begun, and the inevitable spy shots show a crossover-like profile complete with fake exhausts, and nothing like the SF90 Stradale hybrid shown above. However, apparently, Ferrari was so impressed by the design of the Apple Watch, Jony Ive’s LoveFrom design agency has been engaged to reimagine the steering wheel for Ferrari’s hotly anticipated electric supercar. We’ll see how that turns out.

Xiaomi YU7

With its very first EV, phonemaker Xiaomi made the car Apple couldn’t. Xiaomi Auto’s SU7, an electric sedan not dissimilar to the Porsche Taycan (and one that Ford CEO Jim Farley called “fantastic”), attracted almost 90,000 orders within 24 hours of going on sale in 2024. This likely makes it the fastest-selling car of all time. Now in 2025 comes the YU7. It has a similar style and identical wheelbase as the SU7, but it’s been fashioned as an SUV that goes up against the likes of the BMW iX, Kia EV9, or Volvo EX90. Coming in June or July, the flagship will have all-wheel drive, torque similar to the McLaren Artura Spider, and a possible top speed of 157 mph. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 19 minutes, and range is estimated at around 400 to 435 miles. Price could be between 250,000 and 350,000 yuan, which would mean $34,000 to $48,000.

Lucid’s upcoming EV is based on its Air sedan, and the company is billing it as an high-performance luxury SUV. Clever interior design has resulted in the overall length being shorter than an Audi Q7, yet it still fits three rows of seats into its cabin. Lucid claims range will be 450 miles with the dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain delivering a fast 3.5-second 0 to 60 time, as well as a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. (That’s only slightly less than the Ford Lightning.) Inside, a 34-inch curved OLED screen serves as both instrument cluster and infotainment screen. The $96,500 Grand Touring model will land first, with the $81,550 base Touring model arriving in the second half of 2025.

From Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Pope via Britney Spears, the G-Wagon is the ultimate celebrity co-opted luxury off-roader. Famed for its power and pomposity, 2025 sees it arriving as a full-on, $168,000 EV with four electric motors combining to offer up a thumping 579 hp as well as 200-kW charging for the 116-kWh battery pack. This puts it on a par with its ICE equivalents, with 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, and a top speed of 112 mph. But it’s the tank-turning G-Steering that sets it apart from the models that come before, resulting in 360-degree spins and acute turning circles that enhance its handling on off-road rambles.

Polestar 5

After a troubled 2024, Polestar has a new model coming in 2025. The Polestar 5 is an electric performance 4-door GT built on the brand’s first bespoke EV architecture. Developed by the Polestar R&D team in the UK, the bonded aluminum platform will house an 800-volt battery. Polestar is claiming it will produce up to 884 hp and 900 Nm torque, and be placed in competition with the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz EQS. Inside, expect materials such as natural fiber composite deco panels made from flax, and 3D-knitted upholstery made from recycled PET already seen in the Polestar 3 and 4.

Just like the coming electric Cayman, the much-anticipated EV Boxster will ride on Volkswagen Group’s PPE platform. Expect it to use an 900-volt electrical architecture for fast charging. Also expect it to offer enough on-the-road power to matches its gasoline-powered predecessors. While details are scarce, many are suggesting that prices will start at roughly $80,000. Spy shots reveal the Boxster EV will gain Porsche’s new-look headlight design, as well as an elongated wheelbase. Finally, a full-width LED light bar is on show at the rear, just like the other all-electric Porsches.

After speculation that Tesla’s compact EV was to be scrapped, and despite Elon Musk dubbing the entry-level model “pointless” while instead backing the Cybercab, it seems as though a low-cost Tesla is back on track. It could possibly even come in at less than $37,499. Rumors of the return have been fueled by reports that the new model was discussed in a meeting between Tesla’s head of investor relations and Deutsche Bank. A Wall Street Journal reporter claims to have a copy of the meeting report, where it says the EV will be dubbed Model Q and will be launched in the first half of 2025.
