The AI PC era: Boosting performance and durability

In today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape that is spurred by artificial intelligence, the AI PC era is transforming personal computing with advanced performance and durability.

The introduction of AI PCs promises a future where complex tasks, such as video editing, genome decoding or improving daily productivity, are done more efficiently and with better results. Key to this development is durability, with devices crafted to withstand the rigors of everyday use, from frequent travels to heavy workloads, according to Tom Tobul (pictured), vice president of commercial notebooks at Dell Technologies Inc.

Tom Tobul, VP of commercial notebooks at Dell Technologies Inc talks to theCUBE about AI PC era at Dell CES Preview Tour 2025

Dell’s Tom Tobul talks to theCUBE about the integration of AI technology into Dell’s new professional-grade PCs.

“I think the opportunities are endless,” he said. “We spoke earlier about creators, designers and engineers. It’s not only having the AI processing capability, but all-day compute capability. You end up with a device that’s durable enough and lightweight enough to take with you everywhere you go.”

Tobul spoke with theCUBE Research’s Savannah Peterson for the Dell Bets Big on AI PCs at CES 2025 event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the AI PC era and the integration of AI technology into Dell’s new professional-grade PCs, focusing on their performance, durability and real-world applications for users. How the AI PC era elevates performance and durability

In the world of professional-grade devices, performance and durability go hand in hand. Dell’s latest AI PC, designed for users ranging from college professors to engineers, brings cutting-edge technology into a form factor that’s both durable and lightweight. The device is built to last, incorporating features such as a hinge structure that is 96% more rigid than its predecessor, Tobul explained.

“We spend … a lot of time with our users, and we spend a lot of time with them a day in the life. [We ask] ‘Tell us how you use your devices when you’re traveling,’” Tobul said. “We tailor our rigidity, shock and vibe specs to the use cases that we get from our interactions with our customers. It allows us to build test cases based on the way that we know users are going to use our device on a daily basis day in and day out.”

Dell’s approach to AI PCs aims to dispel the myths surrounding AI’s role in personal computing, making it accessible and practical for everyday users. The devices are not just for high-level scientific computing; they also streamline tasks many people perform daily, such as transcribing emails or editing videos, according to Tobul.

“We can talk about how it can improve your daily transcription of emails or documents or speed time to video editing or audio,” Tobul said. “In its simplest terms, what you do today with your PC, an AI PC will help you do it faster with better results than you’re doing it today. That’s as simple as it gets.”
