Trudeau to resign as Liberal leader, PM after successor is named

Justin Trudeau will resign as Liberal leader, he announced during a news conference this morning outside his home at Rideau Cottage.

During the conference, Trudeau also confirmed that he will remain as prime minister until his successor is chosen. The Conservatives had also been preparing to advance a non-confidence motion in Trudeau’s government within the next few days, while the NDP said it was prepared to move forward with a similar vote sometime in the new year.

This comes amid mounting pressure for Trudeau to step down in public polling and from a majority of the Ontario, Atlantic, Quebec and B.C. caucuses. His political future became even more uncertain when Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland suddenly resigned in December, citing conflicts with Trudeau over a number of political issues.

The House will prorogue until March 24th following a meeting between Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon this morning. Per the Liberal Party of Canada’s constitution, a “leadership trigger event” calls for national board of directors meeting to be held within 27 days. An interim leader can then be appointed in consultation with caucus before setting a date for a leadership vote.

Trudeau became the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada since April 2013 and the Prime Minister of Canada in November 2015.
